Car for sale | 1974 Dodge Challenger

by

This dazzling 1974 Dodge Challenger is for sale on Classic American.

It comes in ‘Plum Crazy’ with a black interior and it’s a beautiful car which was sadly relisted due to a timewaster.

Big block 440 Chrysler (7.2L) engine with 4 speed manual gearbox, front disc brakes and what the seller thinks is a 8.75 diff. The big bore exhaust system sounds amazing. UK registered and just passed its MOT.

The really nice thing about the car is that is has no rot – the underside is solid, the rails are solid, the rear wheel arches, boot floor, door lower edges etc are all solid. The car came into the UK a couple of years ago but has only just been registered.

It’s as good as original, not restored or welded all over. Added to that the body gaps and profiles are really good overall as is the fit of the pillarless glass.

The engine is superb, you pretty much only hear the exhaust and the fan blades – no rattles or ticks or anything. Plus it’s bone dry, no leaks from the engine whatsoever.

Looking at the condition of the paint on the block it was certainly refreshed not that long ago. The engine bay is superb, the paint is really tidy and the rails and shock towers are unmarked.

It runs strongly, no exhaust smoke and with excellent oil pressure. The gearbox is a bit slow into second when cold but when warmed up all gears work & no apparent noise, clutch works perfectly. The diff is quiet too.

This car has electronic ignition as original, inertia reel seatbelts front and rear, bucket seats and a nice Pioneer sound system with 4 quality speakers.

Recent work includes new front seatbelts, new air cleaner, new front seat covers, new fuel tank and sender unit, new battery and a new brake master cylinder. Fairly recent things include carpets & exhaust which are still in superb condition.

The door locks don’t work in that either the seller does not have the key or they’re stuck. $30/pair from Classic Industries. Please make sure you look at all the photos in the Google drive folder as they form part of the listing.

The car also has a brand new quadrajet 4 barrel carburettor with working and fully set up thermostatic choke. Cold starting might need some more setting up though!

The car isn’t perfect, its 46 years old – you get old school handling, brakes, gear shift & steering! In terms of condition the paint isn’t perfect (look closely at the photos) although the overall effect is great, the rear seat base has some open seams, the dash top has some cracks and the speedo isn’t working now.

The stereo needs wiring up. It originally had an amplifier which was removed. The non servo assisted brakes are lazy – might be because it needs using, it had been standing for a good while – obviously MOTd OK – or might be that a servo would be a good addition (bolt on).

The lower sill flange is a bit crooked in places through incorrect jacking – no rust or strength issues and could be straightened easily.

The seller has a folder with start up and pull away driving videos so you can have a listen to it, plus a suite of extra photos including the all important underside (when it was being MOTd).
