Historic Racing Barn Find

18 February 2010

Classic AmericanThere’s nothing like a good barn find to get any classic car fan’s imagination racing and when that barn find turns out to be an historic racer… well, things just don’t get any better! Needless to say we were fascinated when Bill Shepherd from Bill Shepherd Mustang got in touch: ‘Having had the honour of “Captaining” Lord March’s Replica in the 1999 St Mary’s Trophy washout, it gave me a taste for more and I’ve been searching for one of the original four (Ford Galaxies) ever since.

‘I think I’ve found one – and perhaps the only one to still exist apart from Jack Sears’ own Willment car. The car is overdue to start restoration… I’m in touch with quite a number of ex-Alan Mann personnel and will be piecing together the full story over time – fortunately they’re still local – and alive!’

Bill very kindly included some pictures of the barn-find Ford being dragged from its hiding place and all the parts that came with it and which proved its racing provenance. Bill reckons that the chassis number confirms this is a ‘Factory Lightweight’ Race Car specially built by Holman and Moody for Ford and is one of only four known to be shipped to Europe to race in ’63 (something confirmed by Lee Holman).

Previously only the Willment car of Jack Sears was known to still exist and Jack reacquired this car some years ago. Consequently this Galaxie can only be one of the remaining three, being either the Alan Brown/Henri Greder car, the Sir Gawaine Baillie car or the Ford of France/Bo Ljungfeldt ’63 Tour de France Car. By a process of elimination, Bill reckons it is possibly the latter. Assuming this is that car, in ’65 it appears to have passed into the privateer hands of John Bond-Smith whose wife Jackie campaigned it in a number of events. The car’s history is rather hazy after the Sixties and it appears to have been laid up for the following thirty years. Very few period photos – particularly on the ’63 Tour De France – seem to exist so if anyone has anything at all Bill would be delighted to see it.

The car is largely complete, having all the special features and lightweight panels, but the shell is pretty badly rusted and the engine has a holed block. Interestingly it came with front disc brakes which appear period and lend credence to Alan Mann running a brake development programme for Ford. According to Bill ‘The plan is now to carry out a painstakingly careful restoration and completely reconstruct this wonderful old car to exactly period correct specification and then race the hell out of it!’ We look forward to sharing it with you when it’s completed.

Obituary: Dick Wells

18 February 2010

Classic AmericanBack in January came the sad news that one of the stalwarts of the post-war hot rodding scene, Dick Wells, passed away due to complications after heart surgery late last year, he was 75. Wells’ career in American motorsports started in 1960 when he became the first editor of National Dragster magazine, one of the sport’s most influential publications. He later moved to Hot Rod Magazine and was also executive editor at Motor Trend, and it was while working for Petersen Publishing Co as director of special events that Dick produced the first ever SEMA show in 1967. Some say this was his most important contribution to the performance industry in America and the SEMA board showed their gratitude by inducting him into the SEMA Industry Hall of Fame in 1993. He was also honoured many times over by many other automotive organisations over the years.

His love of Drag Racing saw him join the NHRA, who he worked for tirelessly since the early days of the organisation, eventually joining the board of directors in 1979 where he continued to be an important force behind the scenes. Tom Compton, President of the NHRA called him ‘an ambassador for the sport like no other’. Dick Wells was also the first active President of the National Street Rod Association in the early Seventies and was one of those responsible for putting on the original Street Rod Nationals that would grow to being one of the biggest automotive events anywhere.

UK hot rodders may remember him for his visit to the NSRA Supernationals at Knebworth House back in 2002 when he and Jack Stewart of the L.A. Roadsters were the UK NSRA’s guests of honour. Dick had recently been drafted in by Jack Stewart to help in publishing Jack’s new book ‘L.A. Roadster’s A Retrospective’, and the pair met many British rodders that weekend giving a seminar’s on the Californias hot rod scene and also while signing copies of the new book that they’d brought with them. As one of the driving forces behind many aspects of the American performance industry his influence and experience will be greatly missed. KH

Euro-legislation threat to Yanks

18 February 2010

When the European Commission and its many and various objectives are mentioned, it's rarely good news, especially for any type of car enthusiast. This time it’s American car owners that are in its sights, with some new proposals that could have far-reaching consequences for the American supply and support industries all over Europe.

Anthony Cohen is well known in these pages as the top man at North London car import business American Car Imports, but he has recently been in contact with Classic American in his other role as Chairman of the American Imports Agents Association (A.I.A.A.). It seems that there is a very real threat of an impending new Independent Vehicle Approval (IVA) system that will make it absolutely impossible for any business or individual outside of a major manufacturer to import and legally register an American vehicle less than six months old. Yes, you read that right; every single importer of new US-built vehicles could face very serious consequences with this legislation along with, in time, all supporting businesses such as parts, accessories, warranty and finance specialists.

They propose to do this by imposing technical requirements to be applied to any imported vehicle that would be impossible to comply with on low volume imports. The changes required would cost thousands of pounds per vehicle and render them completely unaffordable, even if the modifications were practical and achievable, which in many cases they wouldn’t be.

This has come about because, without getting long-winded, the European Commission has been trying to close some loopholes in the current type approval system that have allowed some non-EC manufacturers to block rubber stamp some non-type approved vehicles and offer them for sale cheaply on the EU market. This clumsy action was picked up by the F.I.A. who are the governing body for all EU manufacturers and who reported the ‘misdemeanours’ to the European Commission itself.

Unfortunately the predictably heavy-handed response means that the EC are now trying to harmonise IVA across all 27 member states, thus removing the power of individual governments to preserve the niche businesses that presently cater for the low-volume American car import industry across Europe. At present the UK government has been very supportive of the UK’s American Car scene and has worked with the various organisations that exist, recognising that the import of LHD cars into the UK, while low volume, is a business sector worth preserving. In fact it uses the A.I.A.A. in its literature as an example of it helping ‘the little guys’, although it's taken 14 years of work to get to this place.

As mentioned above, if this legislation were to be passed by the E.C. technical committee (this won’t be put to the vote by actual MEPs) it will without doubt affect everyone involved with the American car scene, businesses and individuals alike right across Europe, and don’t think that just because you own and drive an older ‘classic’ American car it won’t affect you; do you seriously think that the E.C. will not wish to look into the complexities of importing older cars in the future, all in the name of ‘harmonisation’ or even by playing the ‘green’ card.

This is an urgent matter for all US car owners and enthusiasts and since voting takes place in February 2010, time is of the essence. Please use the ready drafted letter supplied on Classic American’s website (www.classic-american.com), add your name and address (this is needed to validate the protest, without it the letter will be treated as ‘spam’ mail) and e-mail it to your all your regional local MEPs straight away to register your protest. A link to a directory of MEPs is supplied on the website also. This must be a demonstration of people power from people with horsepower! KH

Call to Arms for all American Car Fans –
Euro-Meddling a Grave Threat to American Vehicles

21 January 2010 | by Keith Harman

When the European Commission and its many and various objectives is mentioned, its rarely good news, especially for any type of car enthusiasts. It seems that there is a very real threat of an impending new Independent Vehicle Approval (IVA) system that will make it absolutely impossible for any business or individual outside of a major manufacturer to import and legally register an American vehicle less than six months old. Painting Petty

21 January 2010

Classic AmericanIn 1970 Plymouth lured Richard Petty back to Chrysler with the introduction of the 1970 Superbird. Capable of speeds in excess of 200mph, this iconic winged warrior is recognised the world over as one of the most significant cars ever to race in Nascar. Richard Petty himself, is an icon in the world of NASCAR, having won seven series championships during his illustrious 35-year career. With 200 NASCAR Winston Cup Series wins under his belt, he is considered to be the ‘King’ of stock car racing.

Artist Richard Irvine has captured the feature cars that are somehow unique, special or historically significant. 'Not only that, but each one has the viewpoint taken from above – giving the viewer a perspective they would probably never have a chance to see. As with the other pieces in this series, the image can be viewed vertically or horizontally. I’ve definitely created a unique challenge for myself with this particular series!’

These limited edition reproductions are individually signed and numbered by Michael Irvine and embossed with Michael's studio seal and come with a certificate of authenticity. Scottish Wall of Death

21 January 2010

Classic AmericanThe National Theatre of Scotland, Ken Fox Troupe and Artist Stephen Skrynka will be bringing one of the UK’s most famous Walls of Death to Scotland this February. Skrynka will be taking his chances on the Wall of Death with the world famous Ken Fox Troupe, for this unique evening of high drama. The performers in this multi-media event will offer audiences a unique and intimate opportunity to discover a vanishing way of life as the Ken Fox family share with us what happens when you run away and join the circus. ‘Wall of Death – A way of life’ offers a revealing insight into one family’s way of life, and their involvement with an artist.

This evocative evening of noise, thrill-seeking and the smell of Castrol R, will also premiere a major new installation by Skrynka which focuses on the emotional response the performance elicits from its audience. The Wall of Death first appeared in the United Kingdom in 1929 and throughout the Thirties. By 1950 there were dozens of them in the UK, however today there are just a few remaining in the world and in fact there are only two Walls of Death in this country, one of which is the famous Ken Fox Wall.

The Ken Fox Troupe is a family affair and includes Ken, his wife Julie, his sons Luke and Alex and Luke’s girlfriend Kerri. They are probably most well known for their regular slot on BBC One Channel Trailers and regularly appearing at the Stars and Stripes American car show that takes place every July at Tatton Park. They will be touring Glasgow, Aberdeen and Edinburgh from February 4th to 28th. For more information visit www.nationaltheatrescotland.com

American Vintage

21 January 2010

Classic AmericanThe VSCC concluded an amazing 75th Anniversary year with their annual Winter Driving Tests at Westcott, Bucks. Among the 50-strong entry list were three Yanks. Terry Dickie’s 1916 Dodge 30/35 Four which was also the oldest car taking part, Hugh McGarel-Grove’s 1930 Ford Model A and one of the rarest Yank models in the UK was Hugh Privett’s 1922 Paige-Jewett 6/50, believed to be one of only two Paiges to reside here.

The Paige-Jewett features a stock front end, but with a remodelled back, and is powered by a six-cylinder 4.1-litre engine. The car spent around 20 years in storage prior to being purchased from a dealer. Hugh was looking for a rare Yank that would be suitable for trialling. Prior to him acquiring the car, much restorative work had been completed to the chassis, but the engine required a full rebuild. It was making its first competitive outing at Westcott, and picked up a 3rd Class Award.

Hugh McGarel-Groves and his son Charlie both own Ford Model As, a very popular model with many VSCC members for a wide range of competitive events as well as touring. Unfortunately Hugh’s Model A had recently succumbed to engine maladies, so he borrowed Charlie’s car for the Driving Tests. This Model A Roadster was originally built in Canada, hence the RHD and was then shipped to South Africa, from where it was imported to the UK around 10 years ago. Both Model As are completely standard and according to Hugh, replacement parts are readily accessible at short notice which is an added bonus. He also picked up 3rd Class Award. PB

Cobra Jet Comeback

17 December 2009

Classic AmericanIn the late Sixties, Ford might have pounded Ferrari on the racetrack, but on America’s main street it didn’t have much to stand up to the onslaught from the General and Mother Mopar.

That changed in the spring of 1968. With the help of Rhode Island Ford dealer Bob Tasca, the Blue Oval brigade unleashed the fearsome 428 Cobra Jet Mustang. And to make sure that it garnered a fearsome reputation on the street, Ford built 50 lightweight fastbacks, which were campaigned in the National Hot Rod Association’s Super Stock classes. In the hands of drivers like Al Joniec, Bill Lawton and Hubert Platt, they absolutely dominated the stock ranks, with Joniec winning the Super Stock Eliminator final at the 1968 Winternationals.

Virtually four decades after the introduction of those fearsome cars, Ford Racing introduced a late-model Cobra Jet, based around a 2008 S197 body in white Mustang. As in the Sixties, Ford built just 50 examples, but unlike back then, all were strictly drag cars, built to compete in the NHRA Stock and Super Stock classes. They didn’t come with serial numbers, so could not be titled and driven on the street, but on the strip proved extremely competitive.

For 2010, Ford Racing has developed yet another Cobra Jet. It incorporates many features from the 2008 car, but a longer development period has resulted in an even more potent package. As before, just 50 cars will be built, all strictly for drag racing. Three supercharged or two normally aspirated cammer V8s will be offered, as will a race-prepped five-speed manual or automatic transmission. The new cars will also come standard with a 8.50 certified Roll Cage and will employ a launch control feature, which allows the driver to preset the engine revs after staging the car at the Christmas Tree.

As we went to press, all 50 of the 2010 Cobra Jet Mustangs had already been accounted for, but the entire list of components are available through the Ford Racing parts catalogue, so if you have the desire and access to a base V6 Mustang, there’s no reason why you can’t build your own. HE

Wildcat in the Barn!

17 December 2009

Classic AmericanMany of us will have read the book Cobra in the Barn which relates ‘Great stories of automotive archaeology’ in which car enthusiasts make amazing discoveries of abandoned cars in barns, lock-ups and outbuildings. Well, Classic American reader and Buick afficianado Ian Scott must have taken some inspiration from those stories, as he has made his very own amazing find in a lock-up in London.

Ian takes up the story: ‘I just wondered if Classic American knew of any 1969 Buick Wildcat GT convertibles in this country? I have known of one for over 10 years. The car was repaired and painted by my brother shortly before he painted my own ’58 roadmaster. It had its MoT done and was put in a garage in east London.

‘Roll on nearly a decade, and for some reason I was thinking about the Wildcat and what had happened to it. On a whim, I drove down to where the owner lived. I was in luck; the owner still lived at the same address. I asked him about the Wildcat and he informed me that he had not seen it for at least seven years and wasn’t even sure if it was still in the garage. We drove a couple of miles to the garage and once more I was in luck, the keys to the garage locks still operated. The doors were very stiff and hard to open, but as the doors opened there it was, just as I remembered it. We closed the doors and returned to his house to discuss its future. He was very keen for the car to see the light of day once more.

‘Yesterday the Wildcat was collected from its hideaway and taken to a friend’s workshop. Apart from damage to the paint work, incurred by a third party using the garage at some time, and three flat tyres, the car wasn’t in bad condition. The fluids were checked and topped up, a bit of fresh fuel and a battery and it even started up briefly (I had to abort after the water pump seized and fan belts burst into flames). A new water pump was fitted within an hour, the car was insured and even driven six miles to have its first MoT in nine years. The plans are to get it up to the same standard as my ’58. I think it is a very rare car. Only 2374 model 46667 custom convertible coupes were made in 1969.’

Well, we’re not exactly sure as to how rare the car is; however, we’re fairly confident that any other readers out there who own or know of a Wildcat convertible like Ian’s, will be in touch with us straight away. In the meantime, we look forward to seeing the end result of Ian’s handiwork on the car; if it’s anything like the ’58 then it’ll be a truly stunning vehicle!

Adam Price receives ‘Best Newcomer’

17 December 2009

Classic AmericanAdam was presented the award at the Wild Bunch presentation dinner at Drayton Manor, Saturday 28th November 2009. Adam is gearing up for the 2010 Drag Race Season with his newly rebuilt Team Gridlock Fiat Topolino Competition Altered Race Car. The 23-year-old had a great time competing in his rookie season with his Fiat Topolino and finished sixth with the Wild Bunch and 8th in the Real Steel Series. For 2010, Adam has thrown everything into a rebuild, with the aim of putting together a much more competitive car, starting with a new tagged chassis built by renown chassis builder Bill Felstead of Fester Race Cars.

In 2009, the Topolino won several trophies on and off the track, including Best Modified at the International Modified and Performance Show. For 2010, Adam has built a new 9-inch Ford rear axle, with a Curries Casing and top of the range Strange Engineering components with Strange Pro brakes to replace the ageing Salisbury back axle, which he didn’t think would take the power of the new stroked small block Mopar engine. This features twin four-barrel Holleys on a hi-rise tunnel ram which is being built by Adam at the moment. By going much larger with the rear wheels and remounting the body to give it a much more aggressive stance, Adam is really pleased with the progress so far.

The Topolino was originally built way back in 1980 and Adam is trying to keep the nostalgic style, while adding his own personality to the look of the car. As for the car’s name: ‘Go Hard or Go Home’ it indicates his all or nothing approach to racing and the build! He’s going to be pretty busy racing in 2010, and will be racing with the Wild Bunch Series, Real Steel, Roy Wilding Nostalgia Race Car, APIRA and MSA Point Series. Way to go Adam! PB

All Change!

19 November 2009

Classic AmericanClassic American was recently bought by Mortons Media Group Ltd of Horncastle, Lincolnshire, which means that after ten years of nuzzling at the bosom of Auto Trader, we’re on the move to the rural charms of Lincolnshire. Mortons are one of the largest family-owned independent publishing companies in the UK with a portfolio of magazine titles of a similar size to Classic American and that can only be good news for Classic American as it will mean we can share resources with their other titles, as Mortons take on our subscriptions, admin roles and other costs.

Mortons are probably most famous for their classic motorbike titles, including Classic American’s former stable mate Classic Bike Guide back when both titles were owned by Myatt-Macfarlane Publishing. Their expertise is very much in publishing specialist titles and Mortons will bring a whole host of new thinking in marketing, promoting and producing Classic American in the future.

On a sadder note, it does mean that not everyone will be coming with Classic American to Lincolnshire and that includes Deputy Editor Andy Craig, who has become a well-known figure on the title over the past two years and Art Editor Tony Crowther who has been tirelessly cranking out Classic American for over eight years now. Likewise, Ad sales executive Vanessa Kerwin-Royle and Administrator Nichola Hanbridge will not be accompanying the title either.

The transition will be a smooth one and you shouldn’t notice any changes to your favourite American car magazine – but more on that in upcoming issues. In the meantime all that remains is for us to thank Andy, Tony, Vanessa and Nichola for their hard work over the years and their contribution to the title’s continuing success. Classic American has belonged to a number of different media groups in its 21 year history and it’s a fact of life in the world of publishing that titles are bought and sold; nevertheless we’re looking forward to sharing the next successful chapter in the Classic American story with all our loyal readers, subscribers and advertisers.

Obituary: Mick Jenkinson

19 November 2009

Well known on the American car show scene for over 30 years. Mick Jenkinson sadly died suddenly on the 22nd October 2009. He owned his first Yank at the age of 17 years, a 1959 Chevrolet which started a lifelong passion for restoring and enjoying American and British classic cars. Many of his beautifully restored cars were show winners, including his 1955 Cadillac Sportsman’s Coupe which won Classic American’s Car of the Year in 1995. Likewise his 1958 Buick Riviera Special and 1971 Buick Riviera were also Classic American feature cars.

He was a perfectionist and was known for his attention to detail; a very shy and modest man many people benefitted from his vast knowledge. Sadly in recent years he became totally blind, but still attended cars shows as a passenger in his 1959 Cadillac Coupe De Ville.

He still enjoyed talking to many of the wonderful friends he made through the American car movement and still took great interest in the American car scene. He leaves his widow Cynthia, four children and seven grandchildren.

If anybody who knew Mick would like to make a donation in his memory, Guide Dogs for the Blind is the charity his family have chosen.

Event: Detroit Auto Show 2010: Cautious Optimism

11-20 January 2010, Detroit

Classic AmericanAt the Motor City’s premier automotive shindig, there were signs that things are slowly beginning to recover. Our North American correspondent, Huw Evans reports:

After last year, it was probably fair to say that things couldn’t really get much worse for the auto industry. And in Detroit at the North American International Auto Show, it almost felt as if the sky was about to fall in. Open spaces abounded in Cobo Hall, along with what looked like half finished displays. Several automakers chose to not even attend. Green themes dominated the event, but the resulting press conferences and products drew as many questions as they did applause. Fast-forward 12 months and a lot has happened in the car business, a lot of which the doomsayers got wrong.

Both Chrysler and General Motors are still around, having emerged from their trial by fire with a seemingly more strategic focus than they’ve demonstrated in recent years. On the Pentastar stand, it was a fairly quiet year in Detroit, though the Dodge folks saw fit to bolt a Ram Heavy Duty upside down on the roof. The Heavy Duty has been declared Motor Trend’s Truck of the year, and numerous versions were on display, including 3/4 and 1 tons, plus heavy-duty versions, including a dump truck and Hydro repair equipped version.

Because Chrysler is now with Fiat, the stand also contained a singular Ferrari and two Abarth-equipped Fiat 500s, which looked curiously out of place next to Challengers, 300s and trucks. There was also a Chrysler ‘Design Study’ in which a Lancia Delta was updated with ‘Chrysler’ design cues, likely hinting at future medium/small car products. Current CEO Sergio Marchionne has indicated that the two brands will become more cohesive in the coming years.

The current Viper is in its last year and several special editions, some already released, others scheduled are designed to send it out with a bang. The SRT10 ACR-X, a track-ready special, boasts an 8.4-litre 640 horsepower V-10. It will make its debut in the Viper Cup Series, this coming July. On a side note, readers of the local paper, the Detroit Free Press, voted the 2010 Chrysler Town & Country as ‘best family hauler’. Chrysler is the only one of the ‘big three’ still in the Minivan game and based on healthy sales, not likely to exit the market soon. Also announced, were three new Jeep variations, a new ‘rugged’ Liberty Renegade model that slots in between the Sport and Limited models, plus two limited edition Wranglers, the Island with a Kon-Tiki theme, and the Mountain, with High Country touches. Both feature hood decals, special paint and wheels, harking back to ‘themed’ Jeep CJs of the late-Seventies and early-Eighties. Cool.

Ford Motor Company meanwhile saw 2009 vehicle sales increase by approximately 33 percent. Although somewhat helped by the controversial Cash for Clunkers programme instigated by the Obama Administration, it was nevertheless encouraging and the first market share gain for the company since 1995, back in the days when cars like the Taurus regularly sold almost 400,000 units annually. Ford even posted a profit in the final quarter of 2009, when most companies, never mind auto firms, were struggling to make any money at all.

As last year, green technology and alternative fuel dominated the agenda, with Executive Chairman Bill Ford, along with Michigan governor Jennifer Granholm, announcing the creation of new green jobs in the state for proposed electric vehicle and component manufacturing. CEO Alan Mulally’s ‘One Ford’ approach, appears to be gaining momentum, with vehicles like the Fiesta, new 2011 Ford Focus (a true world version this time) and a Federalised version of the Transit Connect small delivery van. Although it’s been around in Europe since 2003, the Connect represents a new take on light commercial vehicles stateside and was actually bestowed with the 2010 North American Truck of the Year award, beating out such hopefuls as the new Chevy Equinox and Subaru Forester.

Ford also bagged car of the year honours from the same judging panel, for its 2010 Fusion Hybrid. Since its debut last year, this car has been the recipient of numerous accolades and has won buyers over from Toyota and Honda. According to Ford, more than 60 percent of new Fusion buyers are conquests, mostly coming from Toyota and Honda. Perhaps the worm has finally turned. We also got the chance to view the new 2011 Mustang GT in person. The new 5.0 V8 looks the business and with 412 horsepower is designed to go toe to toe with the Camaro SS. By the time you read this, it will also have paced the Daytona 500, the first Ford to do so in 40 years. Besides the new engine, the ’11 Mustang also benefits from some chassis and suspension tweaking, plus the 305 horsepower V6 in the base car is nothing to sniff at either. Ford’s Lincoln brand also unveiled an updated MKX crossover, with a revamped interior, that includes MyLincoln Touch, an updated Sync system with touch screens, plus a new 305bhp 3.7-litre V6 engine, said to deliver best in class fuel economy.

Over at General Motors, with four fewer brands in the portfolio than last year (Pontiac, Hummer, Saab and Saturn), the tone was nevertheless one of quiet confidence. All four survivors have witnessed sales increases in the last few months and new GM North America president Mark Reuss, delivered some encouraging words about the company’s future. Reuss, the son of Lloyd E. Reuss a former GM president, is also an avid car guy, much like Bob Lutz who mentored him and is the first engineer to gain the title since his dad.

Although the upcoming Volt and new compact Chevy Cruze (which replaces the Cobalt) were focal points, GM also had some cool concepts. The GMC Granite was a new take for the truck maker, the most car-like vehicle seen from the brand, designed to appeal to young urbanites. It also took home an Eyes On Design award as ‘best concept’ from the show. Buick unveiled a new concept based on the 2011 Opel based Buick Regal, the GS. Although it wore a waterfall grille and ventiports, this car was about as far removed from Gran Sports of old as you could get, though the ‘GS’ lettering looked remarkably similar. It featured 19-inch wheels, massive Brembo brakes and a 2.0-litre high output, turbocharged Ecotec four-cylinder engine rated at 255 horsepower and 295 lb.ft. of torque. Coupled to a six-speed manual gearbox (that’s right in a Buick), the concept is reported to accelerate from 0-60 mph in under six seconds. Although there was no official mention of production, this is one car that seems too ‘finished’ to warrant anything but.

Cadillac also unveiled two new offerings, one a concept, one a production car. The former was the XTS Platinum, which plays on the haute trim level offered on some of the division’s current models, yet showcases what future Cadillacs will probably look like. Powered by a 3.6-litre direct injection V6/plug in hybrid drivetrain, it featured a spacious interior with an orchid style theme and touch screen technology. The other was the eagerly awaited 2011 CTS-V coupe. Powered by a 6.2-litre V8, cranking out 556 horsepower, with a choice of six-speed manual or six-speed automatic with paddle shift, it boasts a wider rear track than the standard CTS coupe and is for all intents and purposes a serious performer, likely the most anticipated Cadillac since the original V8 back in 1949. The CTS-V coupe is planned to go on sale during the summer of 2010, though pricing has yet to be announced. Still, there will no doubt be a lengthy waiting list.

So, electric cars, world cars and thumping V8s – definitely an interesting mix from US automakers this year. How will things look like another 12 months for now at the next Detroit Show? Who knows, but there are signs that from here on in, they can only get better.
