Man’s Ruin

Richard Heeps has been one of
Classic American
’s most admired photographers
for many years and has just successfully launched
a book entitled Man’s Ruin.
We take a look at a small selection of
images from the new title …

Richard Heeps has been photographing hot rods, hot girls and Americana in the UK and the US for over 10 years. His images capture the vibrancy of contemporary scenes inspired by the Forties and Fifties and they pay tribute to mid-century modern life, as it is lived today. Man’s Ruin, the title, is adopted from the tattoo flash of American artist Sailor Jerry. It draws a selection of images together which tells the story of the spirit and pursuit of the all-American dream. The subject matter is stylish, glamorous and hedonistic. Portraits, interiors, images of burlesque, hot rods, dragsters and custom cars all feature in the collection. Heeps preserves and celebrates places where the wrecking ball is looming.
The book takes the form of a 10-year personal photo-documentary. From Santa Pod, a dragstrip in Bedfordshire, England, and burlesque performers in Hollywood, California to Scunthorpe in Lincolnshire, this is a chronological account of Heeps’s journey – with a group of like-minded people – at odds with modernity.

Man’s Ruin is an oversized, superb, high-quality art hardback book, lavishly illustrated, beautifully printed and bound (in Italy, not China!). You will have enjoyed Richard’s work in the pages of Classic American over the past decade, now’s your chance to own a piece or give someone you love the perfect gift.
